When looking at colleges, not many students think about what they want outside of the college campus. Although the actual campus of a school is very important to your decision, the town around you will be your home for the next four years… think about want you want. It may help you make your decision for you.

College towns are great. Many restaurants will take meal points and stores understand the tight budget of most college students. Food places tend to stay open later so when you get the midnight munchies on the weekends, you aren’t searching around for somewhere to eat. Become familiar with the different food options near you. Eating in the same dining commons can become redundant and boring, and sometimes it is just nice to be able to get off campus for a little while with a bunch of your friends.

Also become familiar with what is around you. Big stores like Kmart and Target will have anything that you need living in a dorm or apartment, but if there isn’t one near you, you may have to trek to a different area to find each thing that you need. Not many college students have cars their first year or two, so if you don’t have anything very close to you, you will have to find a ride or use public transportation. The beauty about living in a college town is that many transportation systems make commuting places very easy. Many colleges make bussing free with student IDs, which allows for you to scope out the town or towns around you!

In addition to finding out what is around you, think about the kind of community you want to be in. If you want to be in a city, avoid the small-town residential campuses or campuses in the country. If you do not like the hustle and bustle of a city, definitely take that into account when looking at schools—it will completely change your college experience! Of course you should not let the town around you make your decision for you. Let it be simply another factor in your decision and in the end, you will make the right choice.

When it comes to decorating the old dorm room the primary thing to remember is that it must be cheap. I mean that there is only a limited fund available and all the decorating must come from that fund as must living expenses and incidentals like food and drink. The basics are usually included with the room itself: beds, book cases, closets, and a chair. What is not included would be any art works or individual taste items such as posters and bed spreads. Sheets and such like are most often available from the university laundry, but any specialty bedding must be provided by the resident. All that being said, the time to consider what is wanted to personalize the space should be considered ahead of time and acquired at leisure rather than in an all fired hurry at the last minute.

Consider the wall space to be quite small. Any art work should be sized according to available area. Michelangelo’s David would be great, but where would you put it? More likely a band poster or a trendy art work would be a better fit. The bedding can also be a statement of individual taste. Bright and colourful quilts or comforters and matching pillow shams can really brighten up a dorm room, as can throws over the bed sheets. Throw rugs make a nice and comforting touch to a home away from home as well.

A desk lamp to study by rather than the usual fluorescent lighting can be easier on the eyes while adding a warmth to the desk area not found in many dorm rooms. The purpose of college is to learn and learning how to make the process happier is one thing that all students need to pick up on. Reading and using the net to get facts can be a long and tiring project so the chair should be more than just a straight backed torture implement. Getting yourself a personal chair that fits you and looks homey is a must for a modern dorm room decor.

To recap, first things first: Make art purchases while you have time to consider what you really like and not what your buds think you should like. This stuff will be with you for a while, and the truth is that once it is up it probably won’t come down until it is forced down by the end of your residency in the dorm. Get yourself a comfortable light to read by and a chair to sit in and have them ready to move in with you from the beginning. Have your colorful and happy bedding ready to put in place the very first night so the dorm room can be more like what you want your room to be like. And last but never least; get one of those small refrigerators: those sodas won’t cool themselves. College can be fun if you plan for the comforts of home in the dorm.

It is up to the student moving in how they want to decorate this space to best reflect their style and make it feel more like home. One of the things about dorm spaces is that they are often monitored by the school’s housing authority so there are limited things a person can do to decorate. Housing authority often limits the ability to paint walls, have extra lamps or lighting and to hang curtains. Because there are so many restrictions and limitations on decorating dorm spaces students have to be creative and know how to decorate the space so they can be comfortable and enjoy their dorms. Three of the spaces that can be utilized in a dorm space is the dorm bedding, the floor, and the walls. The dorm bedding can be chosen in colorful and fun patterns and styles to reflect a person’s style, a fun and colorful rug can be added on the floor for an extra layer of coziness and softness, and the walls can be utilized to hang fun posters or cork boards for displaying pictures and memories.
When decorating a dorm wall the things that are put on the wall have to be removable. A different student may be using the dorm the next year so the decoration has to be easy to take down. Some of the different wall decorations that can be used are posters hung with sticky tack or sticky tape, adhesive wall decals that are easily removable, and cork boards that can be hung on the walls as a back drop for a collage of personal pictures. These are all fun ways to add a splash of color and decorative motif to an otherwise plain white dorm wall. The dorm floor is also a notoriously cold and colorless place. Some dorms have boring neutral carpeting while other dorm floors are tiled with cold laminate flooring. A good way to cover up these boring floors is with little area rugs in a 4 x 6 size. A 4 x 6 rug should fit comfortably on the floor in the dorm and they can be found in bright colors and interesting patterns. Dorm bedding is also found in colorful patterns and designs for adding life to the space.

The traditional set up of a dorm room can tend to be a bit on the boring side at times, even for a guys dorm. Girls are not the only ones who can design cool living quarters that will fit a particular style. Guys have the ability to decorate their pad as well. There are more than a few ways to make a boring guy’s dorm room look cool, bringing it life and potential to be an awesome place to hangout. a couple ways to do this is to design with solid colors as well as art and photography posters.

One way to design a cool bachelor type dorm room is to use solid colors where possible. Also, a comfortable bed will be an added plus as the bed is the main feature of the dorm. The comfort factor is an important part of decorating a guy’s dorm room, especially with the bed as thatt is the place that has the most use. In a dorm room, a bed is the place where the typical college guy sleeps, does homework, eats and relaxes. /bedding decor can be found in a variety of different solid colors both dark and light choices.

To top off any color scheme in a guy’s dorm room the perfect thing to give the room more vibrancy and life is any art and photography posters and or pictures. The whole idea behind this is not to go out and get every type of classical piece of wall art. The idea is to pick some piece of art that is liked and or goes with the whole theme of the dorm room. The only thing that matters in regards to choosing wall art and photography is that it is something that represents the student and brightens the room.

In conclusion, decorating a dorm room is something that is a must because a typical dorm room is more than likely a boring room. For a typical guy’s dorm room it is suggested that the best choice be a darker solid color on the bed as well as some bright and colorful wall art that represents the student’s interests and likes as well as livens up the boriness of the dorm. By making great choices in choosing the right dorm room decor it is possible to turn the normal boring dorm into one that everyone will want to see anytime.

Personalizing the space will make it feel more comfortable and homey. If you have your own room, you can decorate the space to match your personality and style. Most dorm rooms, however, come with a room mate and you may need to sit down with your room mate(s) and compromise on a decorating or color scheme. If you can’t agree, you can always divide the room or wall space and each person can decorate their designated area the way they prefer.

Bedding is one of the many things you’ll be required to provide for your new dorm room. The basic bedding items you will need are pillows, a mattress cover, at least 2 sets of sheets, a blanket and a bedspread or comforter. Additionally, an egg-crate or memory foam mattress topper can help make the bed more comfortable. When choosing bedding select items that are easy to care for and inexpensive.
Your bedding may be the focal point of the room so use it as a way to make the room a reflection of who you are. Bright colors or trendy patterns, like camouflage or animal prints, are a good way to show off your personality while turning a dull dorm room into a fun and comfortable place to hang out.

Other ways to transform your dorm room are by adding splashes of color with accent pieces such as picture frames, throw rugs, pillows and window treatments. A vibrant throw rug next to the bed or a funky lamp on your desk, for instance, are ways of making the room your own. Additionally, wall stickers or vinyl lettering can be applied to walls allowing you to customize your space and then they are easily removed when it’s time to move out.

A few mementos from home can help to make your dorm room feel more familiar and more like home. Items like pictures, knick-knacks or stuffed animals are keepsakes you can display in your dorm and they will serve as reminders of home.

Always be sure to check the dorms guidelines regarding painting or hanging items on the walls before beginning any decorating projects.

When it comes to the college life and staying on campus it isn’t uncommon for students to have to share a
room together. Now, it’s not bad if you have two students that are neat and tidy with their room, but when
you throw in one or two students that are messy things can get dirty pretty quickly.

In order to keep a dorm room clean, it’s important for college students to follow these basic rules:

Have responsibilities

When a college student is living with someone else it’s important for them to both have responsibilities.
For example, maybe one person cleans the room this week, while the other does it next week. They can
even take turns doing things such as dishes or anything really. All that matters is that they know what their
responsibilities are and that they’re responsible for their own messes and cleaning up after themselves.
When rules are set straight they’re easier to follow.

Keep up with laundry

In order for a dorm room to look and stay clean the students need to keep up with their laundry. Whether
they do laundry every Monday, Wednesday or Friday, or they do it daily, it’s important that laundry gets
washed, folded and put away regularly.

Put things away when done

With textbooks to computers and even clothes, things can get messy pretty quickly. The roommates must
agree that when they’re done using something they put it away. When people put away their belongings in
the right spot they’re easier to find and everything looks a whole lot cleaner.

Clean weekly

Though students should take care of their belongings on a regular basis it’s a good idea that they take time
aside each week to really clean their dorm room. From washing their bed sheets to vacuuming up their
room they can make sure their room stays even cleaner.

Get rid of clutter

College students are notorious for holding onto things they don’t really need. For example, if a student has
old papers from a class that was a few semesters ago to keeping random trinkets in their dorm it’s best they
just throw them out so that a dorm doesn’t start to get cluttered.

When it comes to keeping a dorm room clean it’s pretty simple. From cleaning weekly, putting away things
when we’re done using them and just having set guidelines we can make our lives much easier and much
more organized on a daily basis.

Picking a Roommate

Most colleges offer students the opportunity to choose who will be rooming with them. A student may have a life long friend, high school buddy, sibling or other family member who they would prefer to be roommates with. Of course, these roommates will have to be accepted to and be attending the same college in order to live together on a campus dorm. Preferences for roommates are usually completed during the housing application process once a student is accepted into that college.

Sharing A Small Space

When sharing the living space of a dorm, students must realize the limited space they will have to work with. Typically, a student will have to share a dorm with one other roommate. However, some colleges may have three to even four students rooming in one dorm. In this case, students may have to sleep in bunk beds and use a multitude of storage options to maintain their stuff. College students often use under bed storage units that can easily slide in and out for clothing, shoes and other items. They may use file cabinets to store any additional items such as school assignments, books and office equipment. Each dorm should have a working space, such as desks to accommodate a proper area to complete homework assignments and other projects. Roommates should come together in planning out how their space will be utilized. For example, students should determine who is in charge of cleaning what, how long each can have company over, who can borrow what and when to return it and the best times for quiet time and bedtime.

Getting To Know A Roommate

It is very important for students sharing a dorm to get along with their roommates and make the best out of college life. Sharing such a small space can be daunting on some and may cause issues between roommates. In order to keep dorm life a little simple, roommates should spend time together each week. Having game days, inviting friends over, going out to the movies, school social events or campus parties together could build a stronger bond between roommates. Being able to positively communicate with one another can be helpful by sharing any concern before it escalates beyond repair. Being able to have a positive relationship with a dorm roommate can lead to life long friendships and can make the college life experience much more rewarding.
